Lymphedema

Recognizing Lyphedema

Lymphedema is an under-diagnosed condition which can result in serious chronic infection, hardening of the skin and disability. It is caused by a malfunction of the lymphatic system which creates an accumulation of fluid in tissues of the limbs or face.

A compromised lympathic system can be caused by:

  • Genetic or developmental malfunctioning of the lymph system
  • Damage from cancer treatment
  • Injuries or trauma
  • Chronic venous insufficiency
  • Infections

Comprehensive Treatment

Although there is no cure, Lymphedema can be managed effectively through a highly specialized treatment called Complete Decongestive Therapy. The Center for Wound Care of Butler Memorial Hospital has certified specialists on hand to treat Lymphedema with this method.

The initial treatment phase lasts 2-8 weeks depending on the severity of swelling. It involves daily drainage and bandaging through a special massage technique called Manual Lymph Drainage. This technique moves fluid to parts of the body with healthy lymph vessels that can absorb and process the fluid through the veins.

When swelling has decreased, patients are fitted with custom garments to begin the maintenance phase of treatment. The garments are worn throughout the day to prevent swelling.

Complete Decongestive Therapy and Manual Lymph Drainage can dramatically enhance a patient's quality of life, overcoming this debilitating disease.
